Tottenham condemns racist abuse directed at Mathys Tel
- Tottenham expressed its condemnation of the racist abuse.
- Mathys Tel missed a penalty in the match against PSG.
- The club plans to collaborate with human rights organizations to hold accountable those responsible for the abuse.
The Tottenham football club expressed its condemnation after the forward Mathys Tel became a victim of racist abuse on social media following the defeat in the match for the European Supercup against Paris Saint-Germain.
Tottenham progressed in the penalty shootout 4-3, after the team lost a 2-0 lead and finished the regular time in a draw 2-2. Mathys Tel was unable to convert his shot in the shootout, which led to negative comments on social media after the match held on September 13, 2025, at the Bluenergy Stadium in Udine, Italy.
The club stated in its announcement: "We condemn the racist abuse directed at Mathys Tel following the defeat in the Supercup match. Mathys showed courage by deciding to take part in the penalty shootout, despite the fact that whoever he portrays is only the scapegoat, hiding behind anonymous profiles to express their disgusting thoughts. We will work with human rights organizations and social media platforms to implement the latest measures against all those we can identify. We stand with you, Mathys."
It is noted that Mathys Tel, who is a dual national with the French youth team, signed a contract with Tottenham in January 2025 for £30 million, having made his move from Bavaria permanent.
