Jerry Jones, owner of the Dallas Cowboys, publicly revealed for the first time about his cancer diagnosis. In the documentary series "America's Team: The Legacy and its Cowboys," which airs on Netflix, Jones disclosed that he was diagnosed with melanoma stage 4 in June 2010.
According to the 82-year-old Jones, he underwent two surgical interventions on the legs and two on lymphatic vessels over the next decade, as the cancerous skin cells metastasized to other parts of his body. Jones noted that the experimental drug PD-1 helped him in the battle against the disease.
The Cowboys' first trainer, Brian Schottenheimer, characterized Jones's battle with cancer as "an inspiring story" and emphasized that his openness could give hope to others. Schottenheimer himself underwent surgery for a torn Achilles tendon in 2003 and noted that cancer does not make exceptions.
