  • The Vansen castle is smaller in size than Versailles.
  • The tower of the castle is the tallest in Europe.
  • The history of the castle includes famous connections, such as Marquis de Sade.

The Vansen castle, located just 15 minutes from the center of Paris, offers visitors a quieter alternative to Versailles. This medieval coral castle is known for its stunning tower, which is the tallest in Europe, and has a rich historical context.

The Vansen castle was built in the mid-14th century during the Hundred Years' War between France and England. It became the residence of the French king Charles V, who wanted to showcase the greatness of his kingdom.

Since its opening, the castle has welcomed approximately 145,000 visitors, which is a significant contrast to the millions that visit Versailles. Local guide Cindy Smiley-Eslin notes that the conditions for visiting the Vansen castle are much more comfortable.

The tallest tower in Europe

The castle tower, standing 52 meters high, symbolizes the strength of the French monarchy from the 14th century. The castle is also associated with the English king Henry V, who stayed here in 1422, along with legends about his body.

Famous connections

Since the 15th century, the castle has functioned as a residence, where such notable figures as the future king of France Henry IV and Marquis de Sade stayed. The latter was known for his works and teachings.

Remaining graphite inscriptions can be seen on the walls of the castle.

Historical chapel

The chapel, located opposite the tower, showcases its stained glass from the 16th century, depicting the apocalypse. The castle served as a refuge for the royal family during the turmoil in 1648, but later King Louis XIV decided to build a palace in Versailles.
