Google Updates Gemini for Conversation Memory

  • Google introduces the automatic memory feature in Gemini.
  • Users can disable personalized context in settings.
  • Temporary chats will be added that do not get stored in history.

Google announced a new update for its AI chat-bot Gemini, which allows it to remember previous conversations and user-specific details.

This new feature, which activates automatically, aims to enable more personalized interactions. The smart assistant can now remember favorite hobbies, creative projects, or user preferences, similar to some competitors.

The "Personalized Context" setting is enabled by default, but users can manually turn it off via the Gemini settings.

Michael Sillisky, the senior director of Gemini, noted in a blog post that this feature allows the chat-bot to remember key details and preferences, leading to more natural and relevant conversations.

Another new feature is designed for users who care about confidentiality: it allows them to conduct ephemeral conversations, information from which is not stored. These "Temporary Chats" will not appear in the chat history and will not be retained in the Gemini app's activity.

Messages in "Temporary Chats" will be stored for only 72 hours for processing the feedback link. Both features, "Temporary Chats" and "Personalized Context," will be available in the update, which is rolling out for Gemini 2.5 Pro users in selected regions.

A similar feature was introduced in ChatGPT by OpenAI in the spring, which some associate with the increase in "ephemeral" conversations from AI.

OpenAI stated that it works with experts on implementing additional safety measures and mental health support for vulnerable users.
