The situation with cholera in Sudan is worsening due to the war

  • In Sudan, more than 2,470 deaths have been recorded from cholera.
  • In the Darfur region, 40 deaths were registered over the past two weeks.
  • The government has started vaccination in Khartoum to prevent the outbreak.

Sudan is experiencing the largest cholera outbreak in recent years, which has led to the death of more than 2,470 people and nearly 100,000 suspected cases of infection. According to the organization "Doctors Without Borders" (MSF), the outbreak began over a year ago, and a particularly serious case was recorded in the Darfur region.

In the town of Tavilah, where approximately 380,000 people are fleeing from combat actions, the cholera situation is critical. MSF reports that in the region, over the past two weeks, 40 deaths have been recorded and more than 2,300 patients.

People in Tavilah are forced to live on three liters of water per day, while WHO recommends a minimum of 7.5 liters. The medical facilities in Tavilah cannot cope with the influx of patients, as they have only 130 beds, while in September, the number of patients exceeded 400.

The cholera outbreak is also spreading in other regions of Sudan. In July, a treatment center was opened in Golo, but it quickly filled up with new patients. The Sudanese government has started vaccination against cholera in the capital Khartoum, aiming to prevent further spread of the infection.

However, the conflict between the army and paramilitary forces has been ongoing since April 2023, exacerbating the humanitarian situation. Water in many areas is contaminated, and conditions are only worsening, registering an epidemic.
