Mexico extradited 26 criminals to the USA at Trump's administration's request
- Mexico extradited 26 members of drug cartels to the request of Trump.
- The extradition is not related to negotiations over tariffs with the USA.
- This step was prompted to stop criminal activity with the cartels.
On August 14, 2025, Mexico extradited 26 individuals suspected of being involved in criminal cartels to the USA. This action was taken at the request of Donald Trump's administration to prevent the continuation of criminal activity with Mexican cartels.
The Mexican Minister of Public Security, Omar Garcia Harfuch, reported that these actions are part of a strategy to stop criminals from managing their organizations from abroad. Among those extradited were representatives of such cartels as "Sinaloa" and "Jalisco New Generation." This is already the second mass extradition of criminals this year; last July, Mexico extradited 29 individuals, including the infamous drug lord Rafael Caro Quintero.
Claudia Sheinbaum, the President of Mexico, emphasized that these extraditions are not related to negotiations over tariffs with the USA, although analysts indicate that they may be part of a broader strategy to satisfy Washington's demands. During the press conference, Sheinbaum stressed that these decisions are sovereign and aimed at Mexico's security.
Some experts believe that the extradition of criminals may be aimed at reducing pressure on the Trump administration, which was threatening to increase tariffs on imports from Mexico. Observers note that this could help mitigate the unique violence from the cartels, which often occurs during the arrest of leaders of criminal groups.
Harfuch also confirmed that the US, which is not a signatory, conducts surveillance over central Mexico at the request of Mexican authorities as part of the investigation.
