Sony has ceased operations in Russia after 18 years
- Sony has closed its office in Russia after 18 years of operation.
- The company has stopped supplying consoles and distributing films.
- The free subscription to PlayStation Plus for Ukrainians has ended.
This is reported by Mezha, Ukrayinska Pravda.
Sony officially completed its operations in Russia on August 11, 2025, liquidating its local office. This occurred nearly 18 years after entering the Russian market.
Documents for closing the business in Russia were submitted to the Federal Tax Service on July 10, 2024. The company had intended to cease its operations in 2023, but at that time it received a refusal.
The decision to stop working in Russia was made following the onset of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Shortly after this, supplies of gaming consoles were halted, and the PlayStation Store was closed. In the last years, Sony liquidated its remaining inventory.
In addition to stopping operations and supplying PlayStation, the company also halted film distribution in Russia and closed Sony Music. In the summer of 2024, the Japanese company began closing its physical stores.
Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Sony provided Ukrainians with a free subscription to PlayStation Plus, but this initiative ended in the spring of last year.
