New Wildfires Erupt in Europe Due to Forest Fires
- Wildfires in Spain have claimed three lives.
- In Greece, the fires have destroyed over 10,000 hectares of forest.
- The Spanish government is receiving assistance from other EU countries.
This is reported by El País, Asharq Al-Awsat.
Wildfires that have erupted in Spain and Greece have caused serious consequences, including loss of life and significant damage. In Spain, three people died due to the fires that engulfed the regions of León and Madrid. Two volunteers perished while trying to extinguish the flames, and another individual died while rescuing a horse from a burning stable. As of August 14, the Spanish government activated the EU Civil Protection Mechanism to receive aid in combating the fire, including two aircraft from France.
Meanwhile, in Greece, rescuers continue to battle the flames in the Patras area. Fires in this region and on the islands of Chios and Zakynthos have already destroyed over 10,000 hectares of forest, according to the European Space Agency. Police arrested a 25-year-old man suspected of arson.
In both countries, the fires have been exacerbated by unusually high temperatures and strong winds, complicating the work of rescuers. In Spain, according to local officials, more than 9,500 people have been forced to evacuate their homes due to the threat of fire. In the León region, during the firefighting efforts, 1,500 people are working, including professional firefighters and military units.
Climate changes, according to experts, are only worsening the situation. They note that fires are increasingly affecting urban areas, which were previously rare. The fires in Greece and Spain have become a recurring reminder of the growing risks associated with climatic changes and insufficient resources for dealing with them.
