IAEA Experts Confirm Problems with Water Supply at ZNPP

  • IAEA reported on problems with the cooling water supply at ZNPP.
  • The station lost its reserve line of electricity on July 7.
  • Incidents of shelling near ZNPP are being monitored.

This was reported by Ukrinform, Ukrayinska Pravda, Interfax Ukraine.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported increasing problems with the water supply for cooling reactors at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), which remains under the control of Russia.

According to the IAEA statement, six reactors at ZNPP are in a state of "cold shutdown" since the summer of 2024, but they still require water for the safety systems, nuclear active zones, and baseload generation.

The situation with the supply of electric energy also remains critical. On July 7, the station lost connection with the last reserve line with a capacity of 330 kW and now depends on a single line of 750 kW.

IAEA regularly receives technical updates on the water distribution at the station, including supplies for safety systems. In recent days, difficulties have been observed in ensuring reliable supply of cooling water, especially under high temperature conditions, when the evaporation rate increases.

On August 12, the IAEA team confirmed that it was lifted from the administrative building of ZNPP in connection with fires near the cooling towers. However, according to IAEA information, this did not impact the nuclear safety of the station.

There have also been recorded incidents of shelling in the industrial zone near the station, which occurred approximately 1.2 km from the perimeter of the facility. Nevertheless, the IAEA team continues to monitor nuclear safety at the station.
