The Indian Government is Conducting Rescue Operations After the Flood in Kashmir

  • About 200 people are considered missing without a trace.
  • Rescuers are facing difficulties due to the weather.
  • The floods in Kashmir are linked to climate change.

In Kashmir, India, at least 33 people are believed to have died as a result of the floods caused by torrential rains that affected the village of Chasoti. According to government officials, about 200 people have also gone missing without a trace after the disaster that occurred in the Kishtwar district.

According to information provided by the Deputy Minister of Science and Technology of India, Jitendra Singh, the heavy rains have caused flooding. He noted that it is difficult for rescue teams to reach the villages due to the poor weather conditions.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and stated that personnel from the army, police, and emergency services have been engaged in the ongoing rescue operations. It is known that the heavy rains have blocked roads, and the weather conditions did not allow for the use of helicopters for rescue operations.

Local residents and workers have discovered the bodies of seven people, and have also rescued nearly 60 individuals. Televisions showed footage of palm trees being submerged in water that flooded the village.

Heavy rains, which usually bring more than 100 mm of precipitation per year, are becoming more frequent in the mountainous regions of India, which are prone to regular floods and landslides. Experts indicate that the increase in such phenomena is associated with climatic changes and unplanned construction in mountainous regions.
