The European Union continues to tighten sanctions against Russia, having already adopted 18 sanctions packages and planning the 19th for next month, reported the Deputy Secretary of the European Commission, Jutta Urpilainen. She noted that the sanctions are working and the EU intends to continue to support the economy of Russia.
Jutta Urpilainen clarified that the EU is not discussing the weakening of sanctions, but is preparing a new sanctions package, which may be adopted already in the fall of 2025. She confirmed that the issue of lifting sanctions is not on the agenda for the time being.
The sanctions that were imposed after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 include trade restrictions, financial operations, asset freezes, and bans on visits for key Russian officials.
The latest, 18th sanctions package adopted by the EU is one of the harshest measures since the beginning of the war. It includes sanctions against 22 banks, four companies linked to the Russian sovereign wealth fund, and 26 companies involved in the defense industry.
EU representatives emphasize that these measures are important for further tightening against Russia and limiting its capabilities in strategic sectors.
