Trainer Bill Turner passed away at the age of 78 after a serious injury sustained on Monday. Turner, who worked at Sigwell in Somersett, was a former jockey, and as a trainer became well-known for his success at the Brooklesby Stakes in Doncaster, where he won traditional races six times.
He had been in critical condition in the hospital after reportedly suffering a skull fracture as a result of a fall. His daughter Katie announced his death on Thursday after lunch.
Speaking at the podium, Chepstow said: "Dad was close to fifty years old then. We received a call in the early morning, I decided to come here, kin [Red Snapper] had to run in his name as a tribute, otherwise, he would have wanted it to happen."
"He went this morning. Support from everyone in the world of racing was exceptional. I was supposed to respond to any larger announcements, but I regret that I did not respond to you or anyone else. The love that this man had was boundless."
"He was not only my father but also a father to my sister and grandfather to my son Ryan, he was a father figure to anyone who received help from him in their career."
Kin "Micks Er Men" was the last winner of Brooklesby under Turner in 2013, and this victory was particularly significant. Katie Turner added: "His best moment was the victory of Ryan at Brooklesby on Micks Er Men."
