Systemic Problems of Psychiatric Care in Ukraine Identified After the Death of Ruth Zymankiewicz

  • Ruth Zymankiewicz died due to negligence by an agent at the psychiatric facility.
  • The insufficient number of staff and inadequate training of personnel were identified as systemic problems.
  • Investigations revealed that the facility did not provide adequate therapeutic support.

During the court hearing regarding the death of 14-year-old Ruth Zymankiewicz, who passed away at the psychiatric facility Huntercombe on February 14, 2022, serious deficiencies in the psychiatric care system were revealed. Ruth suffered from complex psychiatric disorders and required constant supervision; however, the agent who was supposed to monitor her left her unattended for 15 minutes, which led to the fatal act of self-harm.

The court established that the staff member who was supposed to supervise Ruth used a false identity and did not undergo the necessary training before starting work. During the hearing, it became known that the facility where Ruth was residing constantly suffered from a lack of staff and relied on agency workers who often did not have sufficient training.

Ruth's parents, Kate and Mark Zymankiewicz, expressed their concerns about the lack of therapeutic support at the facility. They also emphasized that the doctor was located more than 70 miles away from their home, which added isolation for their daughter. In the testimony presented in court, Ruth criticized the insufficient number of therapy sessions and suggested closing the facility due to the unsafe situation.

Experts in the field of mental health indicate systemic problems related to the use of agency staff and the lack of appropriate psychiatric facilities for children and adolescents. They note that excessive reliance on agency personnel can jeopardize patient safety and the quality of medical care.

After the investigation conducted by journalists, the Huntercombe facility was closed in 2023 due to allegations of systemic abuse of patients. This tragedy underscores the urgent need for reform in the field of mental health to ensure patient safety and the welfare of young patients.
