Continuation of the investigation following the incident with police in Florida
- Prosecutors did not file charges against the police officer in Florida.
- The video of the incident sparked a wide resonance in society.
- Attorneys for McNeil appealed to federal investigators.
Prosecutors in the state of Florida decided not to file criminal charges against the police officer who used force during a traffic stop. The incident occurred on February 19, when Officer D. Bauer stopped the vehicle of William McNeil Jr., who was not wearing a seatbelt.
The video, released by McNeil, shows how the officer pulls him out of the vehicle, which sparked a wide resonance on social media. However, prosecutors assert that Bauer's actions were lawful, as he issued 12 lawful commands that McNeil did not follow.
In a memorandum, published on September 14, prosecutors noted that the video from the phone does not reflect the full context of the events. They confirmed that Officer Bauer acted within his powers, as the stop was warranted. During the stop, narcotic substances were found in the vehicle.
Attorneys for McNeil, Ben Cramp and Garry Daniels, called on the federal government to start an investigation, asserting that the prosecutors' statements are an attempt to justify police actions. They believe that their client did not provoke violence from the officers.
