Ron DeSantis Opens New Immigration Center in Florida
- The opening of a new immigration center in Florida is planned.
- The center will be able to accommodate up to 1300 individuals.
- The establishment of the new facility is based on ecological court rulings.
Florida intends to open a new immigration center, announced by Governor Ron DeSantis. This center will be located at the Baker Correctional Institution, which is situated approximately 43 miles west of Jacksonville.
The new facility, which received the nickname "Deportation Depot", will be able to accommodate up to 1300 individuals, with the possibility of expansion to 2000. This decision is based on a court ruling regarding the existing immigration center in Florida's Everglades, known as "Alachua Alcatraz".
DeSantis emphasized that the new center is necessary to support the administration's immigration enforcement policies under President Donald Trump. The governor noted that "there is a demand for this" and expressed confidence that the new center will be filled.
Among the main reasons for the establishment of the new center, the governor highlighted that the goal is not only to detain individuals but also to process them and return them to their home countries.
This initiative is based on a court ruling that prohibits any new construction in the territory of "Alachua Alcatraz" due to concerns about the environmental impact on the surrounding ecosystem.
