Excavation of New Artifacts During the Excavation in Pompeii
- In Pompeii, large-scale archaeological excavations are underway, revealing new artifacts.
- Research has shown that some people returned to the city after the devastation.
- The found remains testify to the attempts to restore life in the midst of ruins.
In Pompeii, the largest excavations in the last 70 years are ongoing. Archaeologists have discovered three buildings, a gymnasium, a fresco that resembles a pizza, and several human skeletons, which testify to the horrific circumstances in which their owners perished. The first findings cover 3,200 square meters, and, according to the director of the archaeological park, Gabriele Zucchetti, this may just be the beginning of new discoveries.
Research has confirmed that some people returned to Pompeii after the catastrophic eruption of Vesuvius in the 79th year of our era. The discovered artifacts indicate that they attempted to find belongings in the upper floors of buildings that remained visible above the rubble. These findings suggest that life in the town continued, despite the horrific conditions.
The discovered remains of ceramics and other artifacts, dated to the fifth century, testify that these inhabitants likely remained there for an extended period. For instance, a small pot was found for making a type of bread, made from reused materials. The life of the inhabitants in Pompeii after the eruption was significantly simpler than before the catastrophe.
Research also indicates that after the eruption, vegetation began to reappear, and the inhabitants dug wells to access underground waters. This testifies to the fact that, despite the devastation, people endeavored to restore their lives amid the ruins.
