Tragedy with Migrants in Lampedusa Sparks Outrage

A total of 27 migrants died when two boats capsized during an attempt to cross the Mediterranean Sea from Libya to Italy. Around 60 people were rescued near the island of Lampedusa, where search operations are ongoing.

This disaster has become one of many that have occurred this year, with more than 700 people having died while attempting to cross the central part of the Mediterranean, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed her "deep sympathy" for the victims. According to a UNHCR representative, the incident has caused "deep sorrow."

On board the two boats were more than 90 people, according to Flavio Di Giacomo, a representative of the International Organization for Migration (IOM). One woman, who survived, told La Repubblica about the loss of her one-year-old daughter and her husband.

"Everything suddenly erupted," she said. "I no longer saw them, my little girl disappeared, I lost them both."

The reasons why the two boats capsized have not yet been confirmed. However, survivors reported that after the first boat capsized, its passengers were forced to switch to another boat, which also capsized shortly thereafter.

Prime Minister Meloni noted that the tragedy highlights the cynicism with which traffickers exploit these vulnerable people.

The island of Lampedusa serves as a reception center for migrants, which is often overwhelmed and has poor living conditions. Currently, there are tens of thousands of migrants residing here who have taken the perilous route across the Mediterranean to Europe.

Since 2014, an estimated 25,000 people have either disappeared or died while attempting to cross the central part of the Mediterranean, according to IOM data.
