Trump Signed a Decree to Simplify Rocket Launches

  • Trump signed a decree that simplifies rocket launches.
  • Experts warn about possible ecological consequences.
  • SpaceX and Blue Origin may benefit from the new rules.

The President Donald Trump signed an executive order aimed at simplifying federal control over commercial rocket launches. This move could benefit Elon Musk and his company SpaceX, as well as other private space enterprises.

The decree requires the U.S. Department of Transportation to either eliminate or streamline ecological reviews for licenses for launches regulated by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). It also calls for the elimination of "outdated, excessive, or unnecessarily restrictive rules for rockets and space vehicles."

Experts argue that such a decree could lead to ecological disasters, as rocket launches can contaminate air and water with toxic substances. They could also harm flora and fauna, including threatening endangered species.

The executive order comes amid a surge in commercial space activities. In 2023, SpaceX conducted 96 launches and plans 180 in 2024. Meanwhile, Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin is also aiming to increase the number of its launches.

Trump believes that ineffective procedures for obtaining permits hinder investments and innovation. However, critics assert that relaxing regulations could lead to serious ecological consequences, especially since rocket launches are linked to significant pollution.

Along with the new decree, the Department of Transportation must ensure that all available permits are utilized to avoid ecological reviews that are mandated by the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). This law allows for the assessment of project impacts on the surrounding environment and human health.
