British cyclists set world records on the track

  • Matt Richardson became the first to cover 200 meters in less than nine seconds.
  • Will Bierig set a new record for the hour for para-cyclists.
  • Charlie Tanfield was unable to break the hour record, covering 53.967 km.

British cyclists Matt Richardson and Will Bierig set new world records during the competition in Konya, Turkey.

Richardson, 26 years old, became the first cyclist to cover the distance of 200 meters from a standing start in less than nine seconds, showing a result of 8.941 seconds. This time surpasses the previous record set by Dutchman Harry Lavreysen at the Olympics in Paris 2024, which was 9.088 seconds.

Richardson noted that he felt he was riding faster than before, and believes he can improve his result. "I was just steering the bicycle, it almost rode itself," he said.

On the same day, 46-year-old Will Bierig set a new hour record in the C5 class, covering 51.471 km. This is the first time in history that a para-cyclist has covered a distance of over 50 km. Bierig survived a serious accident in 2015, after which he returned to sports.

Charlie Tanfield also aimed to set an hour record, but was unable to surpass the distance of 53.967 km that he covered during the attempt. This became his best result in history.
