Putin to Discuss New Agreement on Strategic Arms with the USA
- Putin plans to discuss a new agreement on arms control with Trump.
- Russia and the USA could reach agreements regarding control over armaments.
- The existing START agreement has been suspended by Russia, which causes a deadlock.
The President of Russia Vladimir Putin expressed his intention to discuss a new agreement on strategic arms with the President of the USA Donald Trump before their scheduled summit in Alaska. This initiative is part of efforts to improve global security amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Putin noted that the negotiations could lead to new agreements regarding control over strategic offensive arms within the framework of the START agreement. This could help reduce tensions between Russia and the USA, as well as prevent the introduction of new sanctions from Washington.
Currently, Russia and the USA have approximately 4,309 and 3,700 nuclear warheads, respectively. The existing START agreement, signed in 2010, limits the number of deployed strategic warheads, but in 2023, Russia suspended its participation in it.
Limitations of the START Agreement
The agreement limits the number of deployed intercontinental ballistic missiles to 700 units and provides for mutual inspections of nuclear facilities. Putin emphasized that the USA is developing new types of nuclear warheads, which has caused a deadlock in the Kremlin.
Future negotiations between the USA and Russia may focus on restoring control over strategic armaments, considering that the agreement will expire on July 5, 2026.
Negative Consequences for Security
It is noted that any new developments in arms could lead to an increase in tensions. Putin also warned that Russia would not adhere to limitations on the deployment of medium- and short-range missiles, which could worsen the situation in the region.
