A student from Scotland, Rebecca Yang, was recognized as one of the girls of the year by the magazine Time after creating a solar blanket for homeless individuals. She developed this device to help people living on the streets retain warmth in freezing conditions.
Rebecca, who studies at Kelvin College in Glasgow, started working on her project after realizing how difficult it is for homeless individuals in winter. She noted that her goal is to inspire young people to take an active role in solving problems that affect their communities.
The solar blanket she created won an award at an engineering competition, which had 70,000 participants. As a result of this project, 30 blankets were produced, which were distributed among homeless organizations in Glasgow, and plans are underway to produce another 120 units.
Currently, Rebecca is included in the list of girls of the year, which consists of ten young women from different backgrounds who have received recognition for their achievements. This is the first such list from Time, created in partnership with Lego, to encourage girls to see themselves as creators.
Rebecca said: "It was just a little idea, and I never thought it could become a reality. Now I am proud that my idea helps others." According to her, it is important for girls to realize that they can be builders, and this can open new perspectives in their lives.
