The President of the USA, Donald Trump, may not call Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky after his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the result of which is expected to be negative. Trump noted that if he succeeds, he plans to discuss further steps with Zelensky and European leaders.
Before the meeting with Putin, Trump communicated with Zelensky and European leaders. Zelensky reported that Trump expressed the intention to call after the negotiations to agree on further actions. Trump also wants to invite European leaders for a possible trilateral meeting.
However, according to the opinion of Oleksandr Merezhko, head of the Committee of the Verkhovna Rada on International Affairs, Trump's potential withdrawal from peace negotiations will not be critical for Ukraine, as the country has alternative channels of support through Europe and the US Congress. Merezhko emphasized that Ukraine's support remains important for European countries, as this issue is not only about solidarity but also about their own security.
Trump and Putin will meet on September 15. Zelensky believes that Putin is likely to discuss a pause in the war regarding the legalization of the occupation of parts of Ukraine's territory.
