The National Dialogue in Southern Africa Begins
- The National Dialogue in Southern Africa will commence on August 15, 2025.
- President Cyril Ramaphosa initiated the dialogue to address poverty and inequality.
- Some organizations have declined to participate due to concerns about government control.
The Southern Africa National Dialogue will take place on August 15, 2025, in Pretoria. This event was initiated by President Cyril Ramaphosa to discuss the most pressing issues, such as poverty, inequality, and unemployment.
Representatives from various sectors of society, including political parties, civil organizations, and ordinary citizens, are expected to participate in the event. President Ramaphosa emphasized that the dialogue should serve as a platform for all, where every voice matters.
However, some organizations, including notable foundations, have withdrawn from the process due to concerns about government control over the dialogue. The Democratic Alliance (DA), the second-largest party in the coalition, also declined to participate, calling the dialogue "a mere formality" without any action.
The cost of the national dialogue is estimated at approximately 700 million rand, which has drawn additional criticism. Skeptics question whether the dialogue will lead to meaningful changes in a country where unemployment exceeds 30%.
The dialogue is planned to occur in several stages and will include public discussions in all nine provinces of Southern Africa. A second conference may take place at the beginning of the next year.
