Roblox Faces Criticism Over Child Safety Issues
- Roblox sent a legal letter to YouTuber Schlep regarding his actions against predators.
- Congressman Ro Khanna initiated a petition for child safety on the platform.
- The company defends its policy against banning "predatory" users, emphasizing the safety of their actions.
The online gaming platform Roblox has come under scrutiny after sending a legal letter to YouTuber, known as "Schlep", who focuses on exposing predatory criminals that threaten children. Schlep, a 22-year-old content creator, claims that his investigations led to the arrest of six individuals who were attempting to lure children on the platform.
Last week, Roblox sent Schlep a letter demanding he cease his actions, asserting that his actions violate moderation rules and could lead to harm for children. In response, Schlep accused the company of ignoring evidence he provided.
Congressman Ro Khanna initiated a petition against Roblox, calling out the platform for its inadequate child safety measures. Khanna hopes to gather a million signatures by Friday, highlighting the need for greater safety for young users.
Roblox, in turn, defended its policy, asserting that the actions of "predatory" users, like Schlep, create an unsafe environment for others. The company stated that such users, although they may have good intentions, tend to imitate children and seek to connect with adults.
In response to the petition and growing pressure, Roblox also issued a statement, explaining why it bans the actions of self-proclaimed "hunters of predators". The company stressed that it considers official channels to report safety violations to be more effective.
The controversy has sparked widespread backlash among gamers, activists, and users, who have launched campaigns to support Schlep, including hashtags like "#FreeSchlep" and "#BoycottRoblox". The petition, which was initiated by Roblox investor David Bazuzytsky, aims to "fix the situation or ask for a refund", has gathered over 48,000 signatures.
Roblox is also facing several lawsuits regarding the alleged exploitation of children on the platform, including a lawsuit from a family in California, which claims their 10-year-old daughter was lured through Roblox.
