  • He became the eighth member of the Lakers to be honored with a statue at Star Plaza.

The Los Angeles Lakers will unveil the statue of former coach Pete Railey on February 22. This event will take place during the game against the Boston Celtics, their longtime rival.

Railey was the head coach of the Lakers from 1981 to 1990 during the "Showtime" era and led the team to four NBA championships (1982, 1985, 1987, 1988). During his tenure, the team played 533 games out of 727, and also secured 102 playoff wins over nine seasons.

Railey also played for the Lakers from 1970 to 1975 and worked as a commentator before becoming an assistant coach in 1979. In 2006, he won another championship with the Miami Heat and is currently the president of that team.

The Railey statue will be the eighth to be honored at Star Plaza, where there are already statues of other club legends, such as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, and Kobe Bryant.
