Phil Knight, co-founder of Nike, along with his wife Penny, announced a donation of $2 billion for the Knight Cancer Institute at the University of Oregon. This is the largest single donation ever made for a university in the USA.

The donation will help expedite diagnostics, ensure patients have access to clinical trials and support, which includes nutritional, psychological, and financial counseling, as well as symptom management.

As noted by OHSU President Sherif El-Naggar, this contribution is unprecedented for millions of people suffering from cancer, especially for patients and their families in Oregon.

This donation surpasses the previous record of $1.8 billion, which was set in 2018 by Michael Bloomberg for Johns Hopkins University.

Knight, whose net worth is estimated at $34.5 billion, has previously made significant contributions to universities and academic institutions. In 2013, he donated $500 million to this institute, which became a condition for receiving additional funding.
