Court ruled on Trump administration's actions regarding DEI in education
- The court ruled against the administrative actions regarding the DEI program.
- The Department of Education violated the law, threatening federal funding.
- The lawsuit was filed by the American Federation of Teachers and other organizations.
Washington. A federal judge on Thursday ruled against two actions of the Trump administration aimed at the elimination of the DEI program, which promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in schools and universities across the U.S.
Judge Steven Hellmager, who holds a position in the federal court in Maryland, found that the Department of Education violated the law, jeopardizing federal funding for educational institutions that continued to implement DEI initiatives.
This case arose after a lawsuit was filed by the American Federation of Teachers and the American Sociological Association in July. In her ruling, the judge noted that the Department of Education did not adhere to procedural requirements, although she did not express opinions on the appropriateness or inappropriateness of the policy.
The administrative actions concerned two memorandums, which required schools and universities to cease all "decisions that are based on race," and threatened with federal funding cuts. This campaign was aimed at exposing the extreme practices that the Trump administration considered discrimination against white and American citizens of Asian descent.
Hellmager, appointed by Trump, dismissed the government's argument that the memorandums only referenced the illegality of discrimination. She stated that these actions instilled fear among educators, whose lawful activities could lead to penalties.
The conflict began with a memorandum dated February 14, which stated that any consideration of race during admissions, federal funding assistance, or other aspects of academic life would be considered a violation of federal civil rights law.
The protest sparked significant concern from state and educational groups, which regarded it as illegal censorship from the government.
