UN Report Confirms Increase in Sexual Violence in Conflicts

  • Sexual violence in conflicts increased by 25% in 2024.
  • The UN report includes accusations against Israel and Russia.
  • The majority of victims of sexual violence are women and girls.

According to the latest UN report, in 2024, sexual violence in conflicts increased by 25%. The highest incidents were recorded in the Central African Republic, Congo, Haiti, Somalia, and South Sudan. According to data, over 4,600 people became victims of sexual violence, which primarily involved armed groups, as well as military government forces.

The report notes that 63 pages, including Hamas, are suspected of being involved in systematic violence in conflicts. The UN warned Israel and Russia about the possibility of being included on the upcoming blacklist next year due to the presence of "credible information" about violence, attributed to their military forces.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized that the majority of victims are women and girls, who are attacked on the streets and during attempts to earn a living. The report also states that sexual violence was used as a tactic by military forces, torture, and political oppression.

The report also provides data on incidents of violence in prisons, including in Ukraine and Russia, where numerous cases of gender-based violence, including electrocution and beatings, have been documented.
