The UK Government Partners with TikTok to Raise Awareness About Cosmetic Procedures Risks

  • The campaign with TikTok aims to raise awareness about the risks of cosmetic procedures abroad.
  • Medical influencers will create content to enhance patients' awareness of the risks.
  • New rules will be introduced for clients and medical practitioners in the UK.

The UK government is launching a campaign to inform people about the risks associated with traveling abroad for cosmetic procedures. In partnership with TikTok, medical influencers such as Midwife Marley and Doc Tally will create videos that encourage consultations with doctors in the UK before undergoing procedures.

The campaign aims to reduce medical tourism and enhance patient awareness of the risks associated with cosmetic procedures, such as hair transplants and aesthetic surgery. As part of the initiative, a central list will also be provided for patients, indicating that they need to check before booking a procedure: the qualifications of the surgeon, clinic regulation, and post-operative care.

Health Secretary Karin Smyth stated that many people suffer serious injuries after undergoing procedures abroad due to a lack of relevant consultation and safeguards. She emphasized the importance of safe choices before undergoing procedures.

Along with the new plans, only "qualified" medical practitioners with licenses will be allowed to perform high-risk operations, such as Brazilian butt lifts. There will also be age restrictions for minors to prevent the consequences of dangerous beauty trends that are becoming widespread on social media.
