The military leadership in Mali reported the detention of a group of military and civilian individuals, among whom were two generals and a suspected French agent. The detentions occurred as part of an investigation into attempts to destabilize the country, which the Minister of Defense, General Daoud Ali Mohammedi, mentioned in evening news.

This news emerged against the backdrop of reports of the arrest of army officers, who had been in Mali in recent days. The minister indicated that the detainees acted under the support of foreign states. He also noted that the French citizen is suspected of working for the French intelligence, which allegedly recruited political leaders and military personnel for actions against the government.

The situation in the country remains tense, as Mali continues to fight against violence from armed groups linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State. Following two military coups that took place in 2020 and 2021, the ruling regime has distanced itself from cooperation with French forces and has turned to Russia for security assistance. However, extremist attacks continue, and the security situation remains complex.

It is noteworthy that in June, military leader General Assimi Goita received an additional five years in power, disregarding previous promises to restore civilian rule by early 2024. This occurred following the dissolution of political parties in April.
