WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. Attorney General Pamela Bondi on Thursday appointed the head of the Drug Enforcement Administration, Terri Kool, acting police commissioner of Washington, implementing President Donald Trump's directive on controlling local law enforcement agencies.

This decision came less than a month after the U.S. Senate confirmed Kool to the position of head of the DEA. According to Bondi, the new commissioner receives all the powers of a police chief of the District of Columbia, while the police are required to obtain his approval for the execution of any warrants.

Kool has over 31 years of experience working in law enforcement, of which 22 years were spent in the DEA. She has been involved in the fight against narcotics in such countries as Colombia and Afghanistan, and served as the acting regional director of the DEA in Mexico, Canada, and Central America until her retirement in 2020.

At the same time, the acting chief of the Washington police, Pamela Smith, signed an executing warrant that allows police to share information about individuals who are not under arrest with federal immigration services, such as ICE. This decision became part of Trump’s efforts regarding control over illegal immigration.

Notably, the warrant prohibits police from seeking information about immigration status solely for this purpose. Bondi stressed that it does not align with the policy that protects so-called "criminal aliens."

Trump called these actions "a big step" in the fight against crime in Washington, which he considers an unsafe city.
