The Transfer of Jimmy Lai's Case Due to Health Issues
- The case of Jimmy Lai has been transferred due to health problems.
- Lai was detained on charges related to foreign collusion.
- Lai's son expressed deep concern regarding the health status of his father.
The case of Jimmy Lai, a well-known activist and founder of the now-closed Apple Daily newspaper, was transferred in Hong Kong due to concerns about his health. This occurred after the lawyer reported that the 77-year-old Lai is experiencing heart palpitations.
Lai was detained in 2020 on charges related to foreign collusion that threaten national security. The verdict in his case could lead to a lengthy sentence. Court sessions that were supposed to start on Thursday were postponed due to severe weather caused by a tropical storm.
At the hearing on Friday, Lai's lawyer, Robert Pang, noted that his client had previously expressed that he suffers from insomnia. The court decided to transfer the hearing to Monday so that Lai could receive necessary medical assistance.
Lai's son, Sebastian, expressed deep concern regarding the health status of his father, stating that prolonged confinement in solitary confinement could be a form of torture. He also emphasized that this confinement occurs in high-temperature conditions.
The Hong Kong government dismissed the charges as baseless, labeling them "politically motivated statements." In this context, international organizations, including "Reporters Without Borders," condemned Lai's detention, citing the deterioration of his health over the past 1680 days of imprisonment.
The ongoing case against Lai, which has lasted more than 140 days, is a significant moment for press freedom in Hong Kong and the examination of the independence of the judiciary in the region.
