- Barack Obama supported Democratic efforts against Republican changes.
In Texas, a political battle continues over new district maps, which could potentially grant Republicans five additional seats in the House of Representatives. On Friday, August 14, Texas Democrats announced their readiness to resume work after blocking Republican initiatives regarding redistricting, which had been ongoing for more than two weeks. They agreed to return under the condition that Republicans complete a special session, while California presents its new district maps.
California Governor Gavin Newsom announced that the state will hold special elections on November 4 for the approval of new districts, which aim to increase the representation of Democrats in Congress. He emphasized that California cannot remain an outlier in this battle for democracy.
At a meeting with Texas Democrats, former President Barack Obama stressed that Republican efforts to change district maps are "an existential threat to democracy." Obama highlighted the importance of fighting for fair elections and districts, ensuring equal conditions for both parties.
Democrats control 43 of 52 seats in California's Congress, so new maps could significantly impact the results of future elections. Both parties are gearing up for the battle for control in Congress in 2026.
