Scientists Describe a New Species of Dolphin from Australia

  • A new species of dolphin, Janjucetus dullardi, has been discovered.
  • The specimen was found by Ross Dullard on the beach at Jan Juc.
  • This species may help to better understand the evolutionary changes in dolphins.

In New Zealand, scientists announced the discovery of a new species of dolphin, which has been named Janjucetus dullardi. This species, which lived approximately 25 million years ago, was found on the beach of Jan Juc in Australia.

Researchers note that Janjucetus dullardi had large eyes, similar to those of modern minke whales, and teeth reminiscent of a raptorial whale. Studies have shown that this dolphin was relatively small, only 3 meters in length, and differed from modern dolphins.

This species is only the fourth known to belong to the group of mammalodontids, which existed in Oligocene times, before modern dolphins began to appear. The discovery of Janjucetus dullardi may provide new insights into the evolution of dolphins and their adaptations to changing climates.

The discovery of partial skulls, including teeth and jawbones, has been an important achievement. Research was conducted at Museums Victoria, where scientists confirmed the new species after Ross Dullard, a paleontologist, accidentally found the skull.

This discovery is one of the few that confirms the existence of mammalodontids in Australia since 2006.
