  • Putin may start negotiations with Ukraine after the meeting with Trump.

This was reported by Ukrinform, RBC Ukraine, Ukrinform.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres emphasizes the need for high-level dialogue between the permanent members of the Security Council – the USA and Russia, but underscores the urgent necessity of an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine.

The Secretary-General's spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, stated this in response to journalists' questions about the prospects of the meeting, estimating Donald Trump's chances of success at 75%. "We are not dealing with bets. [...] We advocate for dialogue at the highest level between these two permanent members of the Security Council, and many issues on the agenda," Dujarric said.

He also noted that the position of the UN leadership regarding Russia's war against Ukraine remains unchanged. "We want an immediate, complete, and unconditional ceasefire as the first step towards achieving a just, stable, and comprehensive peace that upholds Ukraine's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence in accordance with the recognized international borders and the UN Charter, international law, and all relevant UN resolutions," he added.

The UN will consider monitoring the course of the meeting and its results. Today, September 15, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin will meet in Alaska.

Expectations from the Meeting

European partners expect that after the meeting with Trump, Putin will initiate negotiations with Ukraine to end the war without preconditions. This was stated by the Chancellor of Germany, Friedrich Merz. He noted that Russia may have the opportunity to agree to a ceasefire and end hostilities.

Merz emphasized that the goal should be the summit, which should also involve the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky. "The summit must secure an agreement on a ceasefire. Ukraine needs strong security guarantees. Territorial issues can only be resolved with the consent of the Ukrainian people," he added.
