India Celebrates Independence Day, Modi Promises Defense Against Attacks

  • Modi warned Pakistan about possible repercussions for attacks.

New Delhi (AP) — Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi warned Pakistan about the possibility of repercussions if the country carries out new attacks on India, during the celebration of the 78th anniversary of independence from British colonial rule.

Speaking from the historic Red Fort in New Delhi, Modi stated that India has established a "new norm" that does not distinguish "terrorists" from those who support terrorism. He emphasized that further tolerating what is termed a "nuclear blackmail" from the side of Islamabad will no longer be acceptable.

"India has decided not to tolerate nuclear threats. For a long time, nuclear blackmail persisted, but now this will no longer be permissible," Modi said.

These statements came three months after intense fighting between India and Pakistan, which has become the largest in the last decade. They escalated after a mass killing in Indian Kashmir, resulting in the deaths of 26 people, most of whom were Indian tourists.

Modi also reiterated the continuation of the indefinite suspension of the Indus Water Treaty, which India suspended after the floral mass killing. The agreement allows for the joint use of water from the Indus River, which is vital for both countries.

"Rivers from India have flooded the lands of our enemies, while at that time my country's villagers suffer from a lack of water," Modi stated, adding that "blood and water cannot flow together." Pakistan warned that any attempts by India to stop or divert water would be considered an "act of war."

On the threat from the U.S., which could reduce its import tariffs on India by 50% by September 27, Modi emphasized the need for energy independence and the development of domestic renewable systems. He called on scientists and engineers to focus on key sectors, including military technology and renewable sources.

Modi also stressed that India should not be pressured to open its markets for agricultural products, as the interests of farmers remain a priority.
