This was reported by ABC News, Asharq Al-Awsat.

PESHWAR, Pakistan -- In the last 24 hours in Pakistan, as a result of floods triggered by heavy rains, at least 49 people have died. Rescuers evacuated 1,300 tourists who were trapped in the mountains due to landslides.

Since June 26, floods have resulted in the deaths of over 360 people, primarily women and children, with the latest fatalities recorded in the southern and southwestern regions of the country.

On Thursday, at least 10 people died in the Gazar district, which is in the Gilgit-Baltistan region, where they were swept away by powerful currents. Another 16 people, including women and children, died in the Badger district as a result of rapid flooding, while 17 people remain missing.

Floods were also reported in the Battagram district, where 10 people died, and 18 are still missing. In separate incidents in Kashmir, administered by Pakistan, another 7 people died.

Rescue services worked for several hours to rescue tourists stranded in the Siran valley in the Manshera district. Gilgit-Baltistan is known for frequent floods in July, which are caused by landslides on the Karakoram Highway, an important trade route.

Gilgit-Baltistan is a major source for glaciers, which provide 75% of Pakistan's water supply. The agency for emergency situations in the region issued new warnings about possible floods due to the melting of glacial lakes.

Research published this week showed that the rainfall from June 24 to July 23 was 10-15% stronger due to global warming. Scientists note that rapid floods are becoming increasingly common in the region.

In 2022, the largest monsoon season in history resulted in the deaths of over 1,700 people and caused damages amounting to nearly 40 billion dollars.
