Australian Lawyer Charged for Misconduct Related to AI
- The lawyer acknowledged responsibility for misconduct in a case involving murder.
- The artificial intelligence prompted the arrest in the review of the case within 24 hours.
- The court emphasized the importance of verifying the information generated by AI.
MEILBURNE, Australia — A senior lawyer in Australia was charged before the court for providing false citations and misleading judicial decisions, generated by artificial intelligence, in a murder case.
The issue in the Supreme Court of Victoria became yet another instance of misconduct, triggered by the artificial intelligence in the judicial systems worldwide.
Lawyer Zachary Natvani, who holds the prestigious legal title of King’s Counsel, stated on himself "full responsibility" for submitting incorrect information in the case of a defendant accused of murder, along with court documents.
"We are deeply disturbed and feel shame for what happened," said Natvani to Judge James Elliott.
The misconduct, generated by AI, prompted the additional arrest in the review of the case, which Elliott hoped to conclude in the middle of the week. On Thursday, the court affirmed that the client of Natvani, who cannot be identified due to his age, was not involved in the murder due to mental incapacity.
"It is clear that the artificial intelligence is used without independent and reliable verification of results," added Elliott.
The court documents do not disclose what exactly the system of artificial intelligence was utilized by the lawyers.
In a similar case in the USA in 2023, a federal court imposed a fine of $5,000 on two lawyers and a legal firm for submitting fabricated legal research, generated by ChatGPT.
