- Sinner continues to win, achieving 25 consecutive victories.
- Ataman earns his first semifinal spot in a Masters 1000 event.
- Gauff advances to the semifinals, defeating Bronzetti.
Defending champion Jannik Sinner defeated Felix Auger-Aliassime with a score of 6-0 6-2, reaching the semifinals of the Cincinnati Open. Sinner, who occupies the top spot in the global rankings, continues his winning streak on hard courts to 25 matches.
In the match, Sinner demonstrated dominating play, utilizing 29 unreturned serves to secure his first semifinal in three meetings with the Canadian, who sits at 23rd in the rankings, all in just 71 minutes.
"Today I felt great on the court. I think you saw it, but every day will be different," said Sinner. "Tomorrow I have a day off, which is good for me. We will try to do some training, and then see what I can do in the semifinals."
The 23-year-old Italian became only the fifth person of this century to achieve 25 consecutive wins on this surface, joining Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and Andy Murray.
In the upcoming match, Sinner will face French qualifier Terence Atmane, who continues his impressive streak, having defeated Danish sixth seed Holger Rune with a score of 6-2 6-3.
"I don't think any words can describe how I feel right now," said Atmane, 23 years old. "It's quite unbelievable, honestly. I can't believe it."
"Being here in the semifinals of Masters 1000, breaking into the Top 100, and even more with this victory today - it’s such a big sum of money for me, so it really helps my career. It means a lot to me. I’m very emotional about this achievement."
Quarterfinalist of the Canadian Open Ben Shelton advanced to the semifinals after defeating 22nd seed Yiri Lehecka with a score of 6-4 6-4.
"I’m hungry. I’m in a good rhythm," said Shelton. "I’m playing good tennis, and my body feels good."
"I think the intensity, combined with the eagerness to prove myself again and again every time I’m on the court, and also the awareness of things I want to improve, is a huge motivation for me and pushes me in every match."
The next opponent for the American super talent will be German third seed Alexander Zverev. In the other semifinal, American second seed Coco Gauff secured her place in the semifinals, defeating Italian Lucia Bronzetti with a score of 6-2 6-4.
"I primarily played aggressively. Maybe in some of those games I became a bit passive. But that’s important. My matches are very light, and they fly by," Gauff said.
"She didn’t give me much speed. I had to play with control, but also aggressively. I think I handled it well. I missed a few serves. But I learned from this and managed to finish the match."
The dual champion of the Grand Slams will next face another Italian, seventh seed Jasmine Paolini, who defeated Barbora Krejcikova with a score of 6-1 6-2 in the second round of the Wimbledon 2024 final, where she defeated the Czech player.
