ABF Acquires Hovis to Create the Largest Bread Brand in Great Britain
- ABF plans to merge Hovis and Kingsmill to enhance efficiency.
- The merger may threaten jobs due to reduced expenditure.
- Hovis reports financial difficulties, including declining sales.
The company Associated British Foods (ABF), which owns the Kingsmill brand, has agreed to purchase Hovis, which could lead to the creation of the largest bread brand in Great Britain, pending approval from the antitrust regulator.
This agreement comes amid a prolonged crisis in the bread manufacturing sector, where Hovis and Kingsmill, both of which report financial difficulties, are looking to improve their performance.
ABF noted that the merger of Hovis's manufacturing with Allied Bakeries, which includes Kingsmill, could lead to reduced expenditure and improved efficiency. However, this may threaten jobs in the local areas.
The agreement between the two major bread manufacturers in Great Britain is subject to scrutiny by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), which assesses the level of competition in the market, taking into account the impact of other brands, such as Warburtons, which is a market leader.
In its latest report, Hovis announced a nearly 9% decline in sales to £447 million for the year ending February 28, 2024, while its losses increased to £4.7 million.
ABF, which also owns the brands Ryvita and Twinings, plans to enhance production and expand its assortment to respond to changing consumer tastes.
