Support for referees increases after the David Coote incident
- Howard Webb believes that the reinstatement of David Coote to refereeing is premature.
- PGMOL raises the level of support for referees following the scandal.
- The organization emphasizes the importance of the mental health of referees.
The head of PGMOL Howard Webb reported that referees in the Premier League receive additional support following the scandal involving David Coote. Coote, who was suspended for several weeks by the Football Association for inappropriate comments about former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp, has also faced serious allegations, including drug use.
Webb believes that it will be very difficult for Coote to return to officiating, even after he completes his suspension and goes through a training program. "It's hard for me to say this, but the reinstatement of David will be very challenging," Webb said. He also stressed that PGMOL is reviewing its support programs to better assist referees in matters of mental health.
The scandal involving Coote has prompted PGMOL to actively discuss support for referees in order to prevent similar incidents in the future. "We want referees to be able to openly talk about their experiences without fear of repercussions," Webb added.
Webb stated that the organization is already considering the possibility of increasing the level of support, including hiring sports psychologists. "This is a sign of strength, not weakness," he noted.
