Germany calls on Israel to stop construction in the West Bank
- Germany has called on Israel to stop construction in the West Bank.
- The new construction plan aims to divide Palestinian territories.
- Critics believe this undermines the chances for peaceful negotiations.
This is reported by RBC Ukraine, Asharq Al-Awsat.
Germany has called on the Israeli government to stop the construction of new settlements in the West Bank following the announcement by Minister of Finance Bezalel Smotrich about the start of work on building 3,401 units in the "Area C" zone. This plan, according to Germany, could create the possibility of establishing an independent Palestinian state.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Germany stated that these actions violate international law and UN Security Council resolutions. They emphasize the need for negotiations on a two-state solution and an end to the Israeli occupation of the West Bank.
Smotrich asserted that the new construction "supports" the idea of a Palestinian state. It is emphasized that this construction will divide Palestinian territory into northern and southern parts, creating the possibility of establishing a single state.
In the international context, representatives of the European Union and human rights organizations also spoke out against this construction. They emphasized that such actions undermine international law and reduce the chances of achieving peace.
Critics of Smotrich's plans, including the organization "Peace Now", stated that this could lead to an escalation of the conflict and further fragmentation of Palestinian territories. Germany and other countries have urged Israel to refrain from further expansion of settlements and to adhere to international obligations.
