In Spain, they are fighting 14 major wildfires under difficult conditions
- In Spain, 14 major wildfires have erupted, resulting in the deaths of seven people.
- In Galicia, several fronts have merged, prompting the closure of roads.
- 15 firefighters received medical assistance in Greece due to the wildfires.
Spain is grappling with 14 major wildfires since September 15, 2025, as the government warns of "unfavorable conditions" for their extinction. The fires have already led to the deaths of seven people and destroyed over 150,000 hectares (579 square miles) of land.
A 12-day heatwave and southern winds are hindering the fight against the flames. Virginie Barcones, the director-general of emergency services, stated that this is one of the worst summers for fires in the last 20 years.
The situation has particularly worsened in Galicia, where several fronts have merged, prompting the closure of six and additional road closures in the region. The national meteorological agency AEMET warned of an extreme fire risk in the northwestern and western regions, where temperatures could reach 40°C (104°F).
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez wrote on X that "today will be yet another very important day with an extreme risk of new fires." Firefighters are battling flames across southern Europe, where the heatwave continues.
The aviation company Avincis, the largest operator of aerial firefighting services in Spain and Europe, reported a 50% increase in flight hours dedicated to firefighting in Spain and Portugal this season.
However, one fire near Molezuelas de la Carballeda in the Castilla y León region, which is one of the largest in Spain's history, has not been extinguished since Thursday, according to Ángel Sánchez, head of the regional forest firefighting service.
15 firefighters hospitalized in Greece
In Greece, near the port city of Patras, firefighters struggled to protect buildings and agricultural areas, as a plume engulfed pine forests and olive groves. Tall flames rose near residential buildings in the outskirts of the city, and dozens of vehicles were destroyed by the fire.
A representative of the firefighting service, Vasilis Vatrakos, stated that "today is yet another very significant day with a high level of fire risk in many parts of the country." At least 15 firefighters were hospitalized or received medical assistance due to smoke inhalation or burns.
