Experts criticize the suspension of NIH vaccine research
- The NIH Director announced the suspension of funding for NIH vaccines.
- Critics blame the Trump administration for the public's distrust in vaccines.
- Experts emphasize the importance of NIH technology for medicine.
This week, the Director of the National Institutes of Health announced that the funding for the development of NIH vaccines, which are the basis for vaccines against Covid-19, is being suspended due to the fact that these vaccines have not gained the trust of the public. This statement sparked criticism among experts who believe that such an approach undermines achievements in the field of public health.
Critics, including Jeremy Berg, former director of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, pointed out that Jay Bhattacharya and other representatives of the Trump administration fostered distrust in vaccines, rather than the Biden administration. They emphasized that NIH vaccines, even if they did not stop infections, were effective in reducing symptomatic cases and severe outcomes of the disease.
Recently, it became known that the Biden administration is suspending funding for NIH vaccine research in the amount of 500 million dollars. This has raised concerns among scientists, who believe that such decisions could hinder future vaccine developments.
Previously, NIH vaccines proved their effectiveness during the pandemic, saving millions of lives. However, recent comments from the leadership of the Department of Health and Human Services have raised doubts about their safety and efficacy. In particular, Robert Kennedy, the new secretary of health, expressed concerns about their ability to prevent respiratory infections.
Experts have noted that NIH technology has great potential not only for vaccines against Covid-19 but also for treating other diseases, such as cancer. Research in this area continues, but reduced funding may hinder these efforts.
