  • Three doctors from Donetsk have returned after more than seven years in captivity.
  • All the doctors reported serious health problems.
  • In total, 84 individuals were released from Russian captivity, including military and civilians.

This is reported by Ukrayinska Pravda, Ukrinform.

On August 14, during a prisoner exchange, Ukraine managed to bring back three doctors who had spent more than seven years in Russian captivity. These doctors are Ihor Kyriienko, Ihor Nazarenko, and Yuriy Shapovalov, who, along with 48 other civilians, were released.

Ihor Kyriienko, a doctor and entrepreneur, was detained in occupied Donetsk in 2018. He did not manage to escape, as he was looking after his paralyzed mother and his disabled younger brother. After his detention, he was held in a strict regime colony, where he received 12 years for politically motivated charges.

During his illegal detention, he developed serious health problems, including an insult and heart attack. His condition worsened, and he suffered from various ailments, including diabetes.

Ihor Nazarenko, a surgeon, was kidnapped in 2017. He was accused of terrorism, tortured, and sentenced to 11 years. Despite the horrific conditions of detention, he sought to provide medical assistance to other detainees.

Yuriy Shapovalov, a neurologist, was detained in 2018 when he was attacked by armed people. After being tortured in the detention facility "Isolation," he was sentenced to 13 years for fabricated charges related to extremism.

In total, on August 14, Ukraine managed to release 84 military and civilian individuals, among whom were three women who had spent more than six years in captivity.
