Castle Gandolfo, Italy — Pope Leo XIII prayed for peace during the evening prayer for the "growing humanitarian situation" in the world, celebrating the Catholic feast on the same day that an important US-Russia summit took place regarding the war in Ukraine.
The first American pope did not mention the meeting between President Donald Trump and President Vladimir Putin, but consistently called for dialogue and the resolution of the conflict, including discussions with Putin and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Leo reminded that the feast on September 15, dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows, was proclaimed by Pope Pius XII during World War II. "How relevant are these words today? Unfortunately, we still feel the absence of peace before the rising of hatred, which does not yield to any human effort," he noted.
The Pope spoke about hope for a peaceful future and emphasized: "We cannot simply reconcile with the logic of armed conflict."
Not only did Leo XIII pray for peace. Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, the spiritual leader of Orthodox Christians, also prayed for a successful outcome of the summit during his visit to the Turkish island of Gökçeada.
The Patriarch expressed hope that "leaders who meet in the Alliance will bring peace to the world, putting an end to this bloody war and ensuring justice and dignity."
Pope Leo XIII emphasized his hope that the summit of Trump and Putin would lead to a cessation of hostilities, especially since the war has been going on for far too long with a large number of casualties.
