Milan (AP) — The football club AC Milan announced the signing of defender Zakari Athekame on Friday, adding another Swiss player this month, as the seven-time European champion aims to return to the Champions League.
The 20-year-old Athekame signed a contract for five years. According to information, the transfer fee for the former Young Boys defender is 10 million euros (11.7 million US dollars).
The Swiss international U21 arrived in Milan a few days after former midfielder Lütceirn Ardon Yashari signed a contract with the club from Brugge for 36 million euros (42 million US dollars).
In the previous season, Milan finished eighth in Serie A and did not qualify for any European tournament.
Athekame participated in all eight matches of the Young Boys League last season. The Swiss champion played all eight matches and finished last among 36 teams. Milan finished 13th and then was eliminated in the playoff stage by Feyenoord.
Athekame was released from his home club Servette in the youth age category and played a total of 15 months in another division of Switzerland for Neuchâtel Xamax.
