Iceland Introduces Reward for Customers Reporting Shoplifting

  • Iceland offers £1 for reporting shoplifting
  • Annual losses from shoplifting amount to nearly £20 million
  • The number of shoplifting incidents in stores reached a record high in 2024

The Iceland supermarket chain has announced a reward of £1 for customers who report shoplifting in stores. Customers who spot suspicious behavior can turn to the nearest employee, who will confirm the incident, after which the reward will be credited to their loyalty card.

Richard Walker, the company's CEO, stated that annual losses from shoplifting amount to nearly £20 million, which negatively impacts the ability to lower prices on goods and pay employee salaries. He emphasized that shoplifting is not a "victimless crime" and urged customers to help address this issue.

In April, official data was published showing that the number of shoplifting incidents in stores in England and Wales reached a record level, surpassing previous highs in 2024. These figures, according to retailers, are likely underestimated, as many incidents go unreported.

The Association of Convenience Stores noted that the number of recorded thefts has increased, but many retailers do not believe in the real investigation of incidents. The UK government also plans to implement measures to combat shoplifting, including new legislation that will impose stricter penalties for "low-level" shoplifting.
