FluMist Vaccine Available for Home Use to Protect Against Influenza

  • FluMist is now available for home ordering in 34 states across the USA.
  • Self-administration of the vaccine helps increase vaccination rates among the population.
  • Vaccination remains the best way to protect against influenza.

AstraZeneca has introduced a new option for protecting against influenza by launching the FluMist vaccine for self-administration at home. This vaccine, which comes in a nasal spray form, is now available for ordering online in 34 states across the USA.

FluMist, which received approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in early 2024, allows adults aged 49 and older to self-administer the vaccine, while parents can do this for children aged 2 to 17 years. When ordering the vaccine, users fill out a short medical questionnaire, which is verified by a healthcare professional.

This product, which has been on the market since 2003, was previously only available in pharmacies and medical facilities. Now, the convenience of home use could increase vaccination rates, especially since vaccination against influenza is crucial for preventing epidemics.

According to CDC data, last year's flu season was particularly severe, with 267 deaths among children in the USA, which is the highest rate since the extraordinary year of 2009. Experts emphasize that vaccination remains the best protection against the virus, although encouraging children to get vaccinated may be a challenging task.

The delivery service for the vaccine will be covered by most health insurance plans, and the delivery fee will be less than $10. AstraZeneca states that the effectiveness of FluMist is comparable to traditional injections.
