Recently published video shows how the Israeli Minister of National Security Itamar Ben Gvir provokes the well-known Palestinian detainee Marwan Barghouti in his cell. This video became the first incident when Barghouti, who is 66 years old, appeared in public after many years. He looks visibly weak and frail.
In a 13-second video, Ben Gvir states: "Who causes harm to the people of Israel, we will destroy him." Barghouti tries to respond, but Ben Gvir interrupts him. The minister published this video on his Telegram channel, which sparked outrage among Palestinian officials.
Barghouti, sentenced to five life terms in 2002 for organizing attacks that resulted in the deaths of five Israelis, is considered one of the most influential Palestinian politicians. Surveys show that he remains popular among Palestinians, who see him as a potential successor to the President of the Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas.
Since the start of the war on July 7, 2023, Barghouti has been held in solitary confinement. His friend Fadwa stated that she did not recognize him in the video due to his condition. Palestinian human rights organizations assert that Ben Gvir bears responsibility for the state of health of Barghouti.
Official Palestinian authorities have condemned Ben Gvir's actions, labeling them "psychological, moral, and physical terror." They are calling for international reaction to the situation with Palestinian detainees.
